7 DEADLY AND LIMITING HABITS YOU NEED TO LET GO OF
There are some habits of ours that are limiting in nature and in order to achieve a lasting change, it will be wise we take care of those habits. A lasting change is one that starts on the inside and then manifest on the outside. You cannot build a sky scrapper with the foundation laid for a bungalow. How tall you want the building to be says how deep its foundation will be. There are so many successful people who in their pursuit of external success, have neglected the internal aspect therefore leaving them miserable.
This post will highlight certain potential limiting habits you may have grown accustomed to over the years and will definitely need to let go of.
Absence of a meditation and prayer life: Buddha was asked, “What have you gained from meditation?” He replied, “Nothing. But here is what I have lost, depression, insecurity, fear of old age and death”. I believe life is more than what we see. We feel this and we know this truth regardless of our belief system. There is a depth to life that we, sometimes, cannot comprehend. Somewhere within us, we know there is definitely more to life than what we see. Meditation and prayer helps us control our mind and thoughts, eliminate negative thoughts and ignites hope.
“Meditation can help us embrace our worries, our fear, our anger, and that is very healing. We let our own natural capacity of healing do the work” – Thich Nhat Hanh
Lack of vision and purpose: Vision provides clarity and direction in life. Purpose gives life a meaning. Living without a vision for your life is synonymous to living life blind. You just ‘flow with the wind’. The danger of flowing with the wind is that you do not have a say as to where the wind will take you. Get a vision for your life. A purpose driven life is one worth living.
Lack of plans, systems and structures: It doesn’t matter how mind blowing or earth shaking that dream of yours may be, it will remain unrealized unless you are strategic in action. Develop a plan towards realizing them. Set daily goals, weekly goals and monthly goals which will all be pointing towards achieving the bigger goal. You desire to be a celebrated actor? Well friend, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Draft out a practical plan towards achieving that big dream. Don’t wake up every morning with the mindset of facing whatever life throws your way. That is a fool’s pattern of thinking.
Lack of discipline: Discipline is simply you subjecting yourself to the demands of your vision. Discipline is the hallmark of success. Discipline subjects you to making the necessary sacrifices towards achieving your goals. It does not matter how big your vision is or how strategic your plans are, if you are not disciplined, your vision is likely to die young.
Allowing everybody into your life: Imagine letting everybody into your house. No restraints and no boundaries at all. That sounds scary right? Different people with different lifestyles, different thought patterns, different values, different belief system, and different hygiene. Such scene will be definitely chaotic and disturbing. It’s the same thing as letting everybody into your life without placing any boundary. When you allow people into your life, you automatically allow them into your heart and your heart is definitely worth guarding jealously. The easiest way to be unhappy is to try to please and impress everybody. Be selective of the people you let into your life because they influence you in one way or another.
Not maximizing time: The mistake we sometimes make is thinking we have time. Procrastination is the thief of time. Discipline yourself to live in the now and living in the now requires acting in the now. Every second lost can never be regained. Every moment lost is lost forever. Tomorrow is uncertain. What you have now is the present. Live and act in the now.
Ungratefulness/Ingratitude: Remember, true contentment comes from being grateful over the little things of life. Ungratefulness births discontentment which makes us miserable. There are so many things to be thankful and grateful for but in constantly reflecting on the losses in our lives, we rob yourself of the joy that comes with the gains. Life has dealt with everyone in one capacity or another. Choose gratitude, choose happiness.
- Wake up every day with a heart of gratitude. It’s a new day, thus a new gift.
- Give thanks to God
- Thank those above you (it takes God and man to move you to the next level)
- Learn to thank your mates (your back will always be covered)
- Always learn to thank those under you; (your sleep will be peaceful)
- Thank yourself (you would never lack the passion to accomplish your vision)
