Don’t Be…A Prisoner of The Past

Tragedy is a tool for the living to gain wisdom; not a guide by which to live- Robert Kennedy

Franklin Delano Roosevelt once wrote ‘men are not prisoners of fate, but prisoners of their own mind’…and I must say he was not far from the truth. The worst prison any man could ever be in is the prison of his past. When you allow yourself to stay locked up in the prison of your past mistakes, failures and tragedy; you are indirectly giving your past control over your present.

Bad things happen- to good people and to bad people. The truth is we all have our moments of darkness, I call them DARK CLOUDS; they are those tragic moments in your life you which never happened.

You may have been abused at some point in your life; you may have lost someone or something very valuable to you. Or maybe you made a grave mistake and you wish you could take it all back….no matter what your dark cloud may look like, revisiting it never make it  better; rather it makes it worse because you are constantly reminded of a past you can’t change.

Our life story is not a product of fate, tragedy, our past mistakes, our happy moments or even our good times! Our life story is a product of our CHOICE. You may not have been control when you went through your dark clouds, but you can decide how that dark moment will affect your life.  You alone can write your life story.

It may look as if you were robbed of your choice when you were constantly abused as a child. You may think the choice was taken from you when you lost that loved one or dream job. Or maybe you misused that choice when you made that mistake. But guess what? It is just a chapter among many chapters. You have the power to decide how your life story will end.

Don’t let that one event from your past destroy your entire life. Refuse to be defined by your emotional scars and past mistakes. The longer you stay trapped in the prison of your past, the more you miss out on the beauty of the present.  I may not know what you are going through now, but I have had my share of dark clouds. And I know there is some good in this life; you may not see it now because of the anger, guilt, self loathing and depression you feel, but the moment you let go of those feelings, you will see the beauty in life.

Forgive yourself. Forgive yourself of the things you can’t change. It’s time we came back to the present.  Eric Fromm once said ‘the ultimate choice for a man is decide if he would create or destroy, love or hate.

Make that ultimate decision now!

You can choose to love or to hate

To create or destroy

To live or to die

You choose to look back…or move forward!
