In The Pages Of Books, Importance Of Reading
Books are the quietest and most constant of friends. They are the most accessible and wisest of counselors and the most patient of teachers – Charles W Eliot
I personally find reading very therapeutic because books have been my dearest companions for as long as I can remember. Whenever I wish to drift from this world from whatever dark feeling that plaqued me, reading does the job. At that moment, I find myself engaged in a conversation with the author, living the characters and sharing their emotions.
The reading culture is one that is fast becoming extinct especially among the youths. The rapid technological boost and ever-increasing social networks is not really helping the matter. So I am going share with you some cool reasons why you love reading… (Like me..yee!)
- Garnering knowledge, exposure to new information, self-development
It is for a fact that reading exposes us to a wealth of knowledge and information. It arms you with the wisdom to better yourself. I remember this experience of mine that can attest to that. I’m a very argumentative person and I just don’t know when to keep quiet in the course of an argument. Whenever I argued with my male friends, I often (innocently) say “Shut up, you are not speaking sense”. I also noticed that each time I say that, their moods fall and their countenance becomes sullen.
I felt it was because they didn’t know how to argue and I never hesitated to let them know that. But I read this book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus by John Gary and light just flooded in. I now understood the reason for the mood change. It wasn’t that they didn’t have good points to argue with but my words hurt their ego. That knowledge helped me to argue wisely and avoid hurting people’s feelings in the process.
- Sharpening your intellect and improving your understanding
If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads- Ralph Waldo Emerson
- Boost imagination and creativity
This is what I love most about reading- Exploration. There is just no limit to what you can explore in books. Different worlds, different ideas and views on life, different races, different beliefs, different personalities and different thought patterns. Reading connects you to your world and the world outside yours. While reading, exploration is boundless and your imagination knows no limits
- Reading is a Communication
In reading, you communicate with the author, his ideas and arguments provokes and challenges yours. I guess that explains the quote by Woodrow Wilson
I would never read a book if it were possible for me to talk half an hour with the man who wrote it- Woodrow Wilson
Enlarge your world through reading books. Awaken your imagination and your creativity. In reading, we see a different world from the one we have grown accustomed to and that desire to create it is stirred up.
So tour the world. Live moments. Be characters you may never get to be…in the pages of books
