youWhen you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare of compete, everyone will respect you – Lao Tzu

Someone once said this, “if you are not comfortable being yourself, then you should not go on the internet”. I completely agree with this statement. The internet has a way of heightening one’s insecurity and making feel like you are not good enough. The different social media platforms have the capacity to drive your insecurities off the edge. We see different pictures of people with lives that we readily label “perfect”. We draw this conclusion from a few poses and plastic smiles. It may be wise for you to know that pictures don’t always tell the whole story.

Anyways, I was going through someone’s Instagram account one time and in the course of doing that, the statement comparison is the thief of joybecame more real to me. As I stalked the account, I found out that my joy was slowly creeping away. Even without being conscious of it, I found myself comparing my life with that of this person. At that moment, I just wished I was someone else and I hated my life. I felt sadness within me. When I realized what was going on, I had to start reminding myself of these factual and irrefutable truths…

That I am good enough.

That I am perfect for my purpose.

That I am an original.

That I can only shine brightest when I am being me.

That I am a master piece.

That I am in no competition with anyone because the best I can ever be is ME.

That I lose my originality when I try to imitate someone else.

That the world only celebrates originals.

That I am greatness.

That I was designed to perfectly fit into my purpose and if I distort that design by trying to be someone else, I won’t and can’t fully live my purpose.

Oh I reminded myself that tied to my individuality is my importance. I reminded myself that my uniqueness is indeed and in fact my trademark. I reminded myself that there are over 7 billion people on planet earth not one like me. I reminded myself that there is no comparison between the sun and the moon because each is a king while living its purpose. I reminded myself of my purpose and vision, of how magnanimous it is and how unique it is to me.

As I did this, I found my joy slowly creeping back till the point that I started jumping and screaming in excitement oh, I was so happy and elated. The knowledge and understanding of my uniqueness brought back my lost joy. I watched the rest of the pictures with great joy in my heart and happiness for the person’s success.

Envy, jealousy and malice can be traced back to inferiority complex. If you have fully come to terms with your uniqueness and priceless individuality, why envy someone else’s growth? You see the problem is that sometimes we feel threatened by other people’s growth and progress but that is hogwash. Nobody’s success can impede mine. Don’t you understand, the best person I can ever be is ME because that is who I have been created, fashioned and programmed to be.

Don’t measure your success by other peoples own. Appreciate your growth and work on being the better version of yourself. Comparison will only steal your joy and reward you with envy and bitterness which cancerous to your soul.
