The Power of Consistency

I once saw a friend with a writing pad on which was written “Consistency of Optimism.” I fell in love with it immediately and pestered him till he gave it to me. What drew me to the pad was the word ‘consistency.’ That word marks the difference between people who enter into a project or business and grow successful, and those who enter into a project  or business and after a while  fizzle out.

Thinking about the principle of consistency and how it has affected my life, in positive (when I stuck to it) and negative (when I flouted it) ways, I have decided to do a series on the power of Consistency.

And yes, the principle of consistency is powerful, very powerful. For instance, if you drop a 2 months old baby from the top of a five-storey building, is gravity going to have mercy and not smash the child against the ground? No! Why? What goes up, must come down as long as it is within the force of gravity. Gravity is consistent! And that is why nature is. It is therefore important to learn to be consistent. defines ‘consistency’ as ‘steadfast adherence to the same principles, course.’ One thing that should strike you there is ‘steadfast adherence.’

Macmillan dictionary defines it more lucidly and simply as ‘the ability to remain the same in behaviours, attitudes and qualities.’

Consistency is no doubt very vital to the success and sustenance of any venture. People always look out for others who will produce the same quality regardless of changing circumstances. It is not enough to do something a second time. It must be done as good as, and even better than the first time. That’s when we can lay our true claim to progressive attainments.

If anything takes you to the top, that thing surely has to sustain you there. The day you stop doing that thing, you set yourself up for failure.

Take time to think through the results you have been churning out. Have you been consistent? Have you been fluctuating?

Maybe you need to sit down and reassess yourself!
