Here is why you should think twice before you speak
You are master of what you say until you utter it. Once you say it, you become its captive – Hazrat Ali ibn Abu-Talib
Words once said cannot be retrieved back so it is wise we think before we speak. All recorded wars were started and sustained by words. So many damages have been done because of reckless and thoughtless words. So many lives have been lost because of careless words. So many recorded suicides especially among teenagers have been because of ruthless words thrown at them. It is said that a wise man speaks because he has something to say but a fool speaks because he has to say something. In this post, I will list out some reasons why you really need to think before you speak.
Here it goes…
…because when you open your mouth, you open your heart
Our words tell who we are. Our words describes the nature of our heart. A person that spews out bitter words is someone bitter on the inside. No wonder the bible (my favorite book by the way) wrote in Matthew 12:34 that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. The same way what a sick person vomits tells the content of the stomach so do the words of our mouth tell the nature of our heart. Think twice before you speak because once you open your mouth, you open your heart.
…because words are like bullets which once fired cannot be undone
It is said that a bullet lives forever. Well I think the same is true of words. It is interesting how Lawrence L’Peter puts it, “Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will regret”. The emotions you feel are always in motion so they are bound to change but the words you say are forever. You may regret it after but regret cannot unsay it. Like a fired bullets, once the words are out you become a slave to it.
…because you may be crippling someone’s self-esteem and really hurting someone’s feeling
A lot of, in fact, a great number of the teenage suicides can be traced back the reckless words.it is wise for you to actually THINK before speaking.
T = is it true?
H = is it helpful?
I = is it inspiring?
N = is it necessary?
K = is it kind?
In other words, the words you say must have this four qualities. It must be true, inspiring, necessary and kind. Yes, even a rebuke can and should possess these 4 qualities.
…because your words tell whether you are wise or foolish
Proverbs 29:30 puts it best, “There’s more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking”.
A fool is made more a fool when their mouth is more open than their mind – Anthony Liccione
It is better to remain silent and be THOUGHT a fool than to speak out and REMOVE ALL DOUBT. Wise men think before they speak because the understand the value and power of words
We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak – Epictetus
We will be looking forwards to reading your thoughts on this in the comment section. Don’t forget to share guys. Let’s spread the word,
