What happened to Integrity?
I cannot cut my conscience to fit his year’s fashion – Lilian Hellman
In the world of today it almost seems like the virtue integrity is now nonexistent. It is becoming increasing difficult to trust. Faithful men and men of integrity are now one of the scarcest and most wanted commodity.
What happened to integrity?
What happened to people saying what they mean and meaning what they say?
What happened to people being able to be trusted?
What really happened to INTEGRITY?
But before we continue, a more question at this point is “what is integrity?” Integrity can be defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. That is kind of self-explanatory but I have my own understanding of that word. I interpret integrity as….
- The ability to stay steadfast to your values NO MATTER WHAT!
- The ability to beat your chest and say “I will rather be dead than be caught doing this”
For you to even talk about integrity, you must first have values that you hold dear to your heart. Values that define your person and shape your personality. Values that you live with. Integrity is refusing to compromise these values for anything. Sadly, that is not the case today. So many people are willing and so ready to bend their values just for temporary gain and satisfaction. This is why integrity remains a very much sought after virtue. Employers will give anything to find an employee with great integrity. Nations and companies are willing to do anything to find it and whoever finds it keeps it because they understand its scarcity. Understanding the dearth of this great yet scarce virtue, the wise king Solomon asked the question in his book (The Proverbs), “A faithful man (man of integrity) who can find?”
For a truth, integrity will cost you but it will be worth it because what it rewards you with is far greater than whatever it will cost you. To be a person of integrity starts first with building a value system and then a resolute decision to live by those values and not compromise. If honesty and sincerity is in your value system and you have resolved to live by them, then people can trust you with their possession. Absence if these is what births fraud and the likes of it.
I honestly cannot overemphasize the need for integrity. Integrity pays, it surely does. Amazingly. this truth is confirmed in the bible, “A faithful man shall abound with blessings but he who makes haste to be rich at any cost shall not go unpunished” (Prov 28:20). So many people have sacrificed tomorrow’s pound for today’s penny.
Are you a person of your word? Can people hold you accountable by your words? Can people trust you? Do you make promises and see to its fulfillment? Do you stand firm by your values? Because that is what integrity encompasses.
Resolve to be a person of integrity today. The world is in need of you.
